New Dune Trailer
Frank Herbert's EPIC space opera returns to the big screen and the new trailer provides an impressive view into the upcoming film.
A Cinematic Masterpiece
This week Warner Bros. released the second official trailer for the upcoming Dune movie and it is amazing! After seeing the first trailer I was extremely intrigued by this new attempt to bring the Dune saga back to the big screen. David Lynch’s adaptation from the 1980’s received mixed reviews, some people despise it while others love it, hailing it as a cult classic. I fall somewhere in the middle. While I am a huge fan of David Lynch, going all the way back to Eraserhead when I was a teenager, I am also a book nerd. Don’t get me wrong, I love Lynch’s iconic style and I think he captured the futuresque setting in his unique way perfectly. However I felt the Lynch film didn’t have the depth of the books and took too many creative liberties. Denis Villeneuve is a legend and I cannot think of anyone else who could pull off this film and do the story justice. Here is the official description of the film from Warner Bros.:
A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides (Chalamet), a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
Making a film that can do justice to the book is a massive undertaking and Villeneuve has said that Dune is “by far the best movie I’ve ever made.”1 It is my firm hope that Villeneuve will be able to turn Dune into a franchise of at least the first 3 books in the Dune saga. There is such an incredible universe and rich storyline there that spans generations.
Character Matters
It helps to have a notable cast that can bring the characters to life and judging from the second trailer this Dune adaptation will focus more on character development. Characters make the story, they are the story and everything else is background. Without further ado, here is the second Dune trailer:
The movie comes out in theaters and on HBO Max October 22, 2021 but make no mistake this is a movie meant to be seen in the theaters in Imax.
My boy Quinn’s Ideas on YouTube is getting everyone fired up and pumped about this film. He has been focusing on the Dune series and the upcoming flick and he has many good videos on his channel if you are looking for more background information on the story. He has a whole series of videos just about Dune lore.
Hams Zimmer was tapped for the soundtrack and he has done yeoman’s work on this, going as far as to create new musical instruments just for the film. In the music, we can feel that “terrible purpose” Paul dreams about. But just remember, fear is the mind killer.
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”2
Hans Zimmer is a genius and I think you will enjoy the Dune soundtrack very much.
I am curious about what you all think, are you excited for Dune?
